NASA reviews Hurricane Isaias’s Gulf Coast landfall

An October 12 satellite account documents the October 9 storm and its inland movement.

NASA’s MODIS programme published an October 12 account of Hurricane Isaias, using a Terra satellite image acquired October 9. NASA reports that the storm made landfall near Destin, Florida, that evening as a Category 2 hurricane, citing the National Hurricane Center.

The account describes coastal surge, destructive winds and flooding, followed by weakening as the system moved inland. These are reported conditions from the October 9–11 period, not a claim that a hurricane remains offshore today.

Satellite imagery supplies a broad view of the storm’s cloud structure, while local instruments and official reports establish conditions at particular places. A striking image cannot determine the extent of damage to an individual neighborhood.
