The European Commission presented a Water Resilience Investment Accelerator on October 14, designed to help 20 innovative pilot projects attract financing. It operates through Green Assist, an InvestEU advisory initiative funded by the LIFE programme.
The Commission estimates that implementing existing EU water legislation requires approximately €23 billion in additional annual investment. The accelerator seeks to make projects more attractive to investors rather than announce that this entire shortfall has been funded.
Three areas are covered: efficient and circular water use, nature-based approaches to retention and climate adaptation, and technologies or systems that improve water quality. EU start-ups, smaller businesses, farmers and local authorities receive particular attention.
Applicants can seek tailored external advice at no cost through Green Assist, with expressions of interest requested by the end of October. The initiative will connect project developers, potential users and financial institutions; selection and advice do not guarantee private investment or construction.
