The Department of Energy included two Massachusetts university-led efforts among 12 Phase II Genesis Mission awards announced October 8.

An MIT team will combine advanced computing with lattice quantum chromodynamics calculations to study fundamental particles. A Harvard-led project will work on application-aware error correction for scientific quantum computing.

The two projects sit within a $159 million Phase II portfolio spanning universities, national laboratories and private companies. The announcement does not specify the individual award amount for either Massachusetts team.

The awards fund research and development. Later technical validation will determine whether the proposed methods improve scientific computing and quantum-system performance as intended.
