The Department of Agriculture reported obligating $28 million in fiscal 2026 through its Mutual Self-Help Housing Technical Assistance Grants program.
USDA says it redirected $7 million from underperforming oversight contracts to direct grant awards. Section 523 grantees organize and supervise groups of eligible households as participants work on construction or rehabilitation.
The agency reported that fiscal-year grant activity supported 579 new housing units and 181 rehabilitated homes. It also identified 155 new homes supported through the Section 502 Direct Loan Program in connection with the redirected funding.
These figures describe funded and supported housing activity, not a national count of completed homes available for occupancy on October 9. Construction schedules, borrower eligibility, local costs and grantee execution will shape the results in individual communities.
