NASA released its final request for proposals for commercial low Earth orbit destinations October 9. The agency is seeking plans that cover development, certification and operation, together with transportation services for human spaceflight.

The proposal deadline is December 8, and NASA expects contract awards in spring 2027. Its stated approach would support two or more contractors in early development before a further competition for later design, testing, certification and services.

The solicitation is a procurement milestone, not confirmation that a new station has been built or selected. It follows requests for industry information and feedback on a draft acquisition approach.

The transition depends on technical readiness and credible economics. NASA’s future demand can support a market, but companies must demonstrate that destinations can operate safely and serve customers. Submission, selection and operational certification remain distinct stages.
