NASA plans Cleveland wheel tests for future lunar vehicles

Glenn Research Center is preparing to evaluate rover tires and mobility in a simulated lunar environment.

NASA’s October 20 lunar-rover progress report identifies upcoming testing at Glenn Research Center in Cleveland. Engineers from Astrolab and Lunar Outpost are expected to bring wheel designs for evaluations in the coming weeks.

Astrolab plans to test flexible, airless wheels using Glenn’s Simulated Lunar Operations laboratory. Lunar Outpost’s work will examine the soil interaction, traction and mobility of its spring-mesh tires.

The Ohio activity supports future crew-capable lunar terrain vehicles. The tests are planned Earth-based evaluations, not evidence that the vehicles have completed lunar operations or that every proposed capability has been certified.
