West Virginia is included in a proposed transmission project that could receive up to $50 million in Defense Production Act funding, the Energy Department announced October 16.
Virginia Energy would lead the 48-month project with Appalachian Power, Potomac Edison and other regional partners. Planned work combines advanced conductors with Dynamic Line Rating to make more effective use of existing transmission infrastructure.
DOE’s quantified estimate of 290 megawatts of additional capacity refers specifically to Appalachian Power’s Virginia system. It should not be presented as a separate 290-megawatt addition inside West Virginia.
The announcement describes intended support and projected benefits, not completed upgrades or a guaranteed reduction in a particular household’s bill. Engineering, deployment and performance assessment remain later milestones.
