Toledo reports continued air monitoring after chemical evacuation ends

The city’s October 24 update describes Saturday monitoring and cleanup oversight; the evacuation itself was lifted the previous day.

Toledo’s October 24 update says federal specialists are continuing outdoor air monitoring after the hazardous-material release at MC Tank Terminal. The city reports that a mobile EPA laboratory is taking real-time samples while the site’s owners conduct cleanup under federal oversight.

The Saturday notice follows two separate Friday milestones. Fire officials lifted the evacuation zone at noon on October 23 after confirming the material release had ended. A site safety plan was approved that evening, allowing responsibility for cleanup to pass to the owners.

The city says air-monitoring results remain preliminary and have not completed full quality review. Continued sampling is therefore part of the response, rather than evidence that every question about exposure or cleanup has been settled. Toledo is also cleaning playgrounds within the former shelter-in-place area.
