NASA announced October 26 that it and the U.S. Department of Agriculture had signed a memorandum expanding cooperation on Earth observation and agricultural data. The agreement was signed October 24 during an event at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa.

The agencies plan to align satellite observations, geospatial analysis and advanced data tools more closely with agricultural needs. Potential areas include crop monitoring, acreage and yield estimation, drought assessment and other natural-hazard applications. The work supports USDA’s broader data-modernization effort.

The memorandum builds on an existing research and information-sharing relationship. It enables exploration of agricultural statistics, remote sensing, modeling and approaches to managing large datasets. NASA presents the partnership as a way to connect sensing and analytical expertise with USDA’s understanding of farming and ranching.

The announcement does not establish that a new operational forecasting product has already been delivered or that farm incomes have risen as a result. Implementation and evaluation will determine practical outcomes. October 26 is the release date; the signing itself took place two days earlier in Alabama.
