Wildfire staffing shifts east as five large fires remain uncontained

The November 5 national report counts 22 initial-attack fires and 345 personnel on active incidents.

The Eastern Area accounted for 130 people in Thursday’s national wildfire resource table, the largest personnel total among the reporting regions. That was 32 more than in the previous report. The Northwest had 119 personnel and the Southern Area had 87.

The national staffing total fell by five to 345 as assignments declined in other regions. The report lists 26 engines and three helicopters. These counts describe resources recorded against active incidents, rather than all personnel and equipment available nationwide.

The national center reported 22 initial-attack fires and no new large incidents. It recorded no newly contained large fires, and five large fires remained uncontained. National preparedness stayed at Level 1 while the Southern Area remained at Level 2.

Bank of England raises its policy rate as it weighs energy spillovers

The November 5 announcement puts Bank Rate at 4 percent after an 8–1 vote.

The Bank of England announced Thursday that its Monetary Policy Committee had lifted Bank Rate by a quarter percentage point to 4 percent. Eight members backed that move at the meeting ending November 4; the other member favored a half-point rise to 4.25 percent.

The committee said higher energy costs were already reaching businesses and households, but the evidence that they had spread significantly to other prices and wages remained limited. It judged the risk of that spread sufficient to warrant tightening, with recent economic activity stronger than expected.
