New York holiday pauses household waste collection
Monday routes shift to collection beginning Tuesday, with possible delays as crews clear the backlog.
New York City’s Department of Sanitation says there is no trash, recycling or curbside compost collection Monday, October 12, for Italian Heritage Day and Indigenous Peoples’ Day. The change was announced October 7 and applies to today’s holiday.
Residents normally served on Mondays should set their material at the curb Monday evening for collection beginning Tuesday, October 13. The department cautions that a post-holiday backlog can cause delays.
The revised timing does not replace ordinary requirements for sorting and setting out waste. Residents should check their building’s regular route and contact 311 with service questions rather than assume every household has the same collection day.

Station crew transfers Dragon cargo into research facilities
NASA’s October 16 update describes experiment activation following the cargo spacecraft’s October 15 docking.
Astronauts aboard the International Space Station began unpacking a Dragon cargo spacecraft and preparing new experiments, NASA reported on October 16. The spacecraft docked the previous day at 10:27 a.m. Eastern time. Crew members opened the hatch after completing leak and pressure checks.
Early cargo work included moving temperature-sensitive research materials from transport freezers and incubators into station facilities. Preserving those conditions is part of preparing experiments for use; arrival in orbit is not itself a scientific finding.

European cybersecurity bodies revise work program after Cyprus meetings
The October 13–15 sessions addressed funding coordination and a new cybersecurity-and-AI section in the European work program.
The European Cybersecurity Competence Centre reported on October 16 that its governing board and the network of national coordination centres had met in Cyprus from October 13 through 15. Their agenda focused on coordinating cybersecurity investment and implementing European funding programs.
The governing board amended the Digital Europe cybersecurity work program for 2025–2027. The revision adds a dedicated section connected with the EU Action Plan on Cybersecurity and Artificial Intelligence. This is a program-development decision, not an announcement that a new security system has already been deployed across Europe.
