Canada committed C$100 million on October 15 to support offshore-wind development in Nova Scotia, including preparation for the province’s Wind West initiative. The announcement was made in Dartmouth.
C$5 million of the commitment will support floating buoys equipped with light detection and ranging instruments. Their measurements of offshore winds and ocean conditions are intended to give developers information needed to prepare projects.
The Canada–Nova Scotia Offshore Energy Regulator plans a call for bids in winter 2027. Wind West combines proposed offshore generation with transmission links intended to serve provincial demand and carry additional power to other markets.
Natural Resources Canada also announced nearly C$3 million for Net Zero Atlantic to expand transmission modelling toward Quebec, Ontario and other destinations, and to conduct marine surveys for possible cable routes.
The funding advances development work; it does not mean turbines have been built or that electricity exports have begun. Project financing, regulatory decisions, construction and the eventual performance of transmission links remain separate milestones.
