Canada’s unemployment rate increased by 0.2 percentage points in October as about 33,000 more people searched for work. The November 6 Labour Force Survey release put employment at about 21.1 million, with a monthly decline of 4,700 that the agency described as little change.
The rate for people aged 15 to 24 rose by 0.7 points to 13.7 percent. Statistics Canada reported that youth employment edged lower while more young people looked for work. The national employment rate, which measures the share of the population with a job, slipped to 60.5 percent.
Sector totals moved in different directions. Wholesale and retail trade lost about 29,000 jobs, while construction gained 16,000 and education services added 15,000. The national unemployment rate was still 0.2 points below October 2025 despite the latest monthly increase.
