October payrolls rise by 165,000 in first U.S. estimate

The November 6 report puts unemployment at 4.1 percent and revises the previous two payroll gains higher.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimated that U.S. nonfarm payrolls expanded by 165,000 in October. Professional and business services, health care, and transportation and warehousing all added jobs. The separately measured unemployment rate moved from 4.2 to 4.1 percent, a change the agency characterized as small.

The release also changes the picture for late summer. August’s payroll gain was revised from 133,000 to 186,000, while September’s rose from 29,000 to 60,000. Together the revisions add 84,000 jobs to the two previously published gains.

Private nonfarm hourly earnings reached $38.00, 14 cents above September and 3.1 percent above a year earlier. The average workweek held at 34.4 hours. Payrolls count jobs reported by employers, while the unemployment rate comes from a household survey that measures people’s labor force status.
