Canada announced C$30 million for Hitachi Energy Canada on October 16 to support a C$478.8 million manufacturing project in London, Ontario. The planned facility will produce electrical-grade pressboard used in high-voltage transformer insulation.
The federal contribution comprises C$20 million through the Strategic Response Fund and C$10 million through the Investments in Forest Industry Transformation program. The project links wood-fibre processing with electrical-equipment supply chains.
The government says the factory is designed to make up to 20,000 tonnes of pressboard and laminated insulation materials annually. Planned customers include Hitachi Energy’s transformer operations in Varennes, Quebec, and other manufacturers in North America and overseas.
More than 100 new positions are expected at the London facility as part of a broader Canadian workforce expansion. Those are project commitments and expectations, not a count of people already hired at a completed plant.
The announcement supports new domestic capacity during growth in electricity demand. Construction, production ramp-up and realized output remain later milestones; the funding release does not establish that the facility is already operating.
