Environment and Climate Change Canada published a national environmental-justice strategy on October 23 covering 2026 through 2031. The framework aims to guide federal authorities and partners in addressing environmental racism and unequal exposure to environmental harms across the country.

Its priorities include reducing inequities in federal decisions, improving access to environmental information and strengthening participation in decisions affecting communities. The department says lived experience is intended to inform that work, alongside engagement with Indigenous governments, affected communities and other organizations.

The strategy follows legislation that received royal assent in June 2024. Its preparation involved consultation with communities, partners and the public. The department also calls for continuing feedback during implementation, recognizing that environmental protection involves several levels of government and Indigenous rights-holders.

Publication establishes a framework for action rather than evidence that unequal conditions have been resolved. Practical outcomes will depend on implementation and collaboration over the five-year period. The dated development is the October 23 strategy release, not a new law taking effect on October 25.
