DOE plans up to $50 million for Virginia–West Virginia grid upgrades

The proposed project would use advanced conductors and real-time line monitoring along existing transmission corridors.

The U.S. Department of Energy announced October 16 that it intends to provide up to $50 million in Defense Production Act funding for a transmission-capacity project in Virginia and West Virginia. Virginia Energy would lead the proposed work with utilities and regional partners.

The project combines advanced reconductoring with Dynamic Line Rating technology, which uses current operating conditions to inform how much electricity a line can safely carry. The plan emphasizes improvements along existing corridors rather than treating every capacity increase as a new-line construction project.

DOE estimates that the work would add 290 megawatts of transmission capacity across Appalachian Power’s Virginia system. It describes a proposed 48-month project involving Appalachian Power, Potomac Edison and other regional partners.
