The European Union issued a statement expressing alarm at escalating violence in Ethiopia and heightened tension between Ethiopia and Eritrea. It warned that further deterioration could widen instability across the Horn of Africa.

The statement called on the parties to refrain from actions and rhetoric that could increase tensions and to recommit to the Permanent Cessation of Hostilities Agreement through the African Union framework. It also emphasized civilian protection and access for humanitarian assistance.

The EU reiterated support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states in the region and urged external actors to use their influence in favor of de-escalation and political solutions. The statement offered support for diplomacy rather than announcing a new military or financial measure.

The appeal sets out the European Union’s position, but implementation depends on decisions by the governments and armed actors involved. Developments on the ground and any renewed formal talks will show whether the call produces practical movement.
