Boston University joins leadership of NASA farm-emissions campaign
FarmFlux will use airborne measurements to examine agricultural interactions with the atmosphere.
Boston University is jointly leading NASA’s FarmFlux mission with Goddard Space Flight Center and Colorado State University, according to an agency update published October 15.
The campaign will measure gases and particulates from agricultural areas using more than a dozen sensors. The new notice covers planned low-altitude flights near Transit, Texas, between October 22 and November 9.
Boston University’s role gives Massachusetts a research connection to the program, but the announced flight area is Texas, not Massachusetts or New England. The observations will investigate scientific questions rather than establish local enforcement findings.

UK technology employers pledge 10,000 youth work experiences
The three-year commitment accompanies a wider skills plan, but the government’s 20,000 annual entry-level-job figure remains a target.
The UK government announced on October 21 that technology employers have committed to offer 10,000 workplace experiences over the next three years. Companies named in the initial group include Microsoft, Cisco, IBM, Cognizant, Arm, Kainos, QinetiQ and AtkinsRéalis, while other employers are being invited to join.
The placements are part of a broader Digital and Technologies Jobs Plan and the nationwide rollout of TechFirst. The government aims for TechFirst to reach at least one million secondary students by 2028, including 400,000 students at disadvantaged schools, through workshops, career sessions, clubs, competitions and access to an online computer-science platform.

EU seeks evidence on bio-based feedstock for plastic packaging
The consultation runs through January 13 and could inform future measures, but the Commission has not yet proposed a binding target.
The European Commission opened a public consultation on October 21 about the role of bio-based feedstock in plastic packaging. Responses are due by January 13, 2027, and will contribute to a review required by the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation.
Officials are requesting evidence on feedstock availability, technical performance, sourcing, environmental effects and the consequences of different regulatory approaches. The review will also consider recycling technologies and the trade-offs involved when fossil inputs are replaced with material derived from biological resources.
