The UK Cabinet Office launched updated household preparedness messaging on October 22 as the opening phase of a three-year campaign. The advice focuses on disruption to everyday services, including electricity, water, telephone connections and internet access during events such as severe weather.

Suggested preparations include joining the Priority Services Register, which helps utilities identify customers needing additional support, and keeping modest supplies of bottled water and food that stores without refrigeration. The central planning horizon is three days of disruption.

The government says local resilience forums, charities and groups representing people with insecure housing or reliance on foodbanks helped shape the campaign. More than 500 organizations have signed up to distribute its messaging. Some actions are free, while others are intended to remain inexpensive.

The announcement updates advice that has existed since May 2024. It is a preparedness campaign, not notice that a particular emergency is imminent. Its purpose is to help households able to prepare reduce pressure on services supporting people with greater needs.
