European Council President António Costa will travel to Montreal for the EU–Canada summit on October 29 and 30, according to an October 27 announcement. He will represent the European Union with Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, while Prime Minister Mark Carney will represent Canada.

Leaders are expected to launch an Alliance for the Future intended to deepen political and economic cooperation. The announced agenda includes trade, digital issues, critical raw materials, defence and security, as well as education, research, innovation and youth. These are planned discussions rather than completed summit decisions.

The meeting will also review work since the previous summit in 2025, including the Security and Defence Partnership. The Council describes continued cooperation on competitiveness, economic security and supply chains, alongside the existing Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement.

Montreal is the host city for the coming meeting, but the October 27 release is a preview. It does not establish that leaders have already signed the expected framework or agreed on every initiative. Any final commitments will need confirmation from the summit’s published results.
