European biomethane platform opens first buyer-demand window
The November 4 launch begins a matching process whose results are scheduled for March 2027.

Potential biomethane buyers can now submit demand through the first matching round of the European Commission’s Biomethane Mechanism. The demand window opened November 4 and runs until December 23, 2026, on the EU Energy and Raw Materials Platform.
Suppliers will have a separate period, January 21 through March 4, 2027, to express interest in meeting submitted demand. Matching results are scheduled for March 18. Participants receiving a match can then contact one another to explore commercial opportunities outside the mechanism.
The Commission also introduced a regulatory dashboard intended to make national compliance arrangements easier to compare. Its initial coverage includes selected EU countries representing more than 90 percent of current EU biomethane production, rather than every national market.
The mechanism is voluntary and free to use. Its role is to connect prospective counterparties, not to establish that a supply contract has been agreed. The launch therefore begins a staged market-matching exercise; transactions and any eventual production expansion remain distinct from today’s demand-gathering step.
